Challenger memorial day
On this date in 1986, the space shuttle challenger disintegrated as it left our atmosphere after an o-ring seal in its second rocket booster failed to work. The crew compartment and many other vehicle fragments were eventually recovered from the ocean floor after a lengthy search and recovery operation. Although the exact timing of the death of the crew is unknown, several crew members are known to have survived the initial breakup of the spacecraft. But did not survive the violent impact with the ocean. Today we remember their bravery, and appreciate how they advanced our knowledge of aerospace engineering.
